BY JAY DREW
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
At the risk of offending the Rams, Delta football coach Dean Fowles is
wishing his No. 3 Rabbits had drawn 2-A's Parowan in the first round of the Class 3-A
football playoffs.
"We are in a little bit of a subdued mood down here, to be honest
with you," Fowles said.
That's because Delta is playing No. 5 Pine View, also 6-2 -- an unusual
matchup for an outright region champion. That 4 p.m. matchup today is the only one of 32
playoff games this weekend that pits ranked teams.
"Unfortunately," Fowles said, "a good football team is
going to be knocked off really early."
Class 3-A is so spread out that many playoff opponents have never seen
each other. But Delta's coaches have watched Pine View several times, including the
Panthers' surprising 21-14 loss to Canyon View. That, along with losing a coin toss,
relegated them to Region 9's No. 4 seed.
"The south region [9] is the toughest, just flat better than
everyone else," Fowles said. "We had a real tough time with Cedar City, and they
did not even make the tournament. Heck, I picked Pine View to take state before the season
even started."
An excellent golfer, Fowles says he is not "sandbagging" when
he notes that Delta's defense might not have a player as big as Pine View's 6-foot-2,
200-pound running back, Jake Foote.
The Rabbits will have to rely on execution and the deception of their
unique, inverted-wishbone offense. Junior fullback Storm Singleton, an all-stater in 1999,
is their best-known player, but Fowles says the most pleasant surprise has been 6-3 senior
quarterback Mike Corey, new to that position. Final Stat Leaders
Lehi's Chad Smith won the regular-season rushing title with 1,581 yards
on 220 carries, followed by South Sevier's Bryan Castle, who had 1,525 yards on 223
carries. Springville's Bret Groneman easily was the state's top passer, with 2,355 yards
and 23 touchdowns, not including his totals from Tuesday's tiebreaker win over Spanish
Fork. Timpview's Cade Cooper had 1,624 passing
yards and 19 touchdowns, although he threw 161 passes to Groneman's 272 because the
T-birds have been so dominant that their starting quarterback generally only plays 2
1/2 quarters.
Springville's Robbie Gueck had the most receiving yards (1,142),
receptions (49) and touchdown catches (15). Pleasant Grove's Kory Drew scored the most
touchdowns (21), followed by Enterprise's Tyler Banks with 20.
Groneman was responsible for 25 touchdowns (23 passing, two rushing),
followed by Copper Hills quarterback J.D. Westphal's 24. Westphal was boosted by his
eight-touchdown performance against Riverton.
Bingham's 250-pound Jeff Stevenson has the most field goals (six) among
the limited number of schools reporting that statistic.

Timpview set for playoff run
10/21/2000
KEVIN R. CURTIS Herald Correspondent
PROVO -- How good is
Timpview?
Perhaps its 49-21 victory over Region 6 foe American Fork tells all.
The score was 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, 35-0 with 6:19 left in the
first-half and 42-7 at the half.
Even the Murray High coaches, who were scouting in preparation for next week's first
round playoff game, left the game early. "We've seen enough," quipped one Murray
assistant coach.
The fans spent more time visiting with each other than watching the game. When the P.A.
announcer called for a cheer for the offensive line, two parents applauded.
It took a visit from KUTV sports anchor Dave Fox and his helicopter to get the crowd
excited.
Timpview looked every bit its No. 1 ranking in going 9-0 in the regular season -- the
first time in its 22-year history.
Observers were musing at how many Division I players Timpview has on its roster.
Consider the following: Senior Bryant Atkinson hauled in four passes for 57 yards and
two touchdowns in the first-half; Dane Church also caught four balls, two for scores;
Jacob Garrard rushed for 90-yards on five carries. On the first play from scrimmage, he
scampered 63 yards to set up a Jason Owen touchdown which occurred on the second play from
scrimmage.
Perhaps most impressive was the play of quarterback Cade
Cooper. He was 9 of 12 for 157 yards and four touchdowns. The senior looked like a
left-handed Jim McMahon.
Proof positive was the five-play, 69-yard engineering masterpiece that took all of 48
seconds, capped by a 25-yard scoring strike to Church.
"This was a big game for me," said Cooper. "I broke my leg against A.F.
last year so there was a little revenge factor, but the coaches were too nice."
Indeed, the aforementioned players did not see second-half action.
When asked if this was his best Timpview team, Chad Van Orden was reluctant. "The
best Timpview team was the 86', 91' and 97' teams," said Van Orden, referring to the
schools three state championships. "When this team can say that, then they will be
the best Timpview team."
Still, American Fork coach Davis Knight was impressed. "They're as versatile a
team as I've ever seen," said the 34-year veteran coach.
Timpview scored on all of its six first-half drives in fine-tuning for a playoff run.
American Fork's Nate Rowley scored twice and J.D. Beck once in the loss.
Preps need support
by Darnell Dickson Utah Daily Herald 10/19/2000
WHO'S THE best
college prospect among local prep football players?
After talking to several
area college coaches, Bryant Atkinson's name keeps coming up.
Both Utah and BYU are interested in his services, and why not? Atkinson (Timpview) is a dominating linebacker and a
terrific tight end with good size at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds.
Lone Peak quarterback Sam Burgess would make a wonderful option quarterback at one of
the service academies, but his future is probably in basketball, where he's a definite
Division I prospect.
Other players getting looks are linebackers Colt Sampson and Bridger Anderson at
Pleasant Grove, Orem lineman Erik Freeman, Lone Peak defensive back Chase Palmer, Timpview receiver Dane Church and Mountain View
tight end Dan Henry.
Other players who may end up with some offers include Pleasant Grove running back Kory
Drew, Lone Peak running back Matt Mower, Orem running back Troy Sheide, Timpview quarterback Cade Cooper, Provo
receiver Kelby Koop, Payson running back Skyler Crouch, Springville defensive back
Remington Atwood and Springville receiver Robby Gueck.
This is just a quick look-see. Dick Harmon and I will get together soon to discuss the
topic some more.

T-Birds - FOX Fab 50
By: UtahPreps.com

First it started with Skyline. Next, it
was Highland's turn to get the attention. Now, Timpview is the team that has the national
spotlight shining on them. In the latest FOX Fab 50
Regional Rankings, the T-Birds are ranked 14th in the west. After being ranked No. 15 last week and Highland No. 14, the Rams 7-2 loss to
Cyprus last Wednesday solidified Timpview (7-0) as the top team in the state, and the also
jumped them one spot in the rankings.
The T-Birds have been ranked No. 1 in the UtrahPreps.com Football Power Polls Class 4-A
standings since the beginning of the season, and except for a classic victory over rival
Lone Peak, they haven't even been challenged as they have one of the top offenses in 4-A.
With all-state candidates Cade Cooper and Bryant Atkinson leading the way, the T-Birds may be the cream of the crop in the state this
season.

Prep Football Games Of The Day

WEST JORDAN (4-1) AT HUNTER (3-3)
WHEN: Thursday, 7 p.m., Hunter High
ABOUT THE JAGUARS: The Jaguars, who already have a
Region 3 loss to Bingham cannot afford to drop another region game if they want to figure
into the title. After Hunter the Jags visit Granger, host T-Ville and visit Copper Hills.
ABOUT THE WOLVERINES: So much for their 0-3 start. The
Wolverines have taken care of the football better their last three games better than they
did in the first. The Wolverines cannot give the Jags any extra chances with the football.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: West Jordan: DL Eric Pettit, QB Jack
Roberts. Hunter: QB Tarell Richards, OL Brett Bird.
TIMPVIEW (5-0) AT PROVO (2-3)
WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m., Provo
ABOUT THE T-BIRDS: The T-Birds boast one of the
toughest defenses and most potent offenses in the state. The T-Birds look to add the
Region 6 title to their trophy case and after Thursday's battle with the Bulldogs, the
T-Birds host Springville, visit Spanish Fork and host American Fork to close out the
regular season.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS: The Bulldogs are a respectable 2-1
in region play, but after Thursday's game with No. 1 Timpview, they face to of the three
toughest teams in the region in Pleasant Grove and Lone Peak.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Timpview: WR Dane Church, QB Cade Cooper. Provo: SL
Kelby Koop, QB Clayton Barnes.
Timpview Picked to Win Region
6
Timpview High probably won't get any visits from the school's
adopted CNN celebrity this year. Larry King graduated QB Danny Southwick's
step-father and brother-in-law to BYU's Bret Engemann will be more interested in
the Cougars than the Thunderbirds from now on.
But, with potentially one of their best teams, the T-Birds will undoubtedly find
themselves under the local spotlight nonetheless. That's what the other coaches in their
region are predicting, at least. To no one's surprise, Timpview has been tabbed as the
preseason favorite in Region 6 and one of the most dangerous threats in Class 4A.
"We have a team that should contend," said Timpview coach Chad VanOrden.
Though it's not quite the Pass Happy Valley it was a year ago what with the
graduation of star QBs like Southwick, Provo's Chad Nichols, Springville's Brent Neel et
al this high-octane league should produce more than its fair share of exciting
games.
Here's a look at Region 6, with teams listed in their predicted order of finish according
to a Deseret News preseason polling of the coaches:
1. TIMPVIEW: The Thunderbirds are flat-out loaded
with quick and athletic talent who should keep scoreboard operators busy. New quarterback Cade Cooper, a
transfer from Lehi, has a couple of tremendous targets in returning
receiver Dane Church (1,090 yards, 13 TDs) and tight end Bryant Atkinson
(615 yards). Tailback Jacob Garrard, who averaged six yards on 116 carries last
season, is also back for his senior season as is beefy fullback Atu Lealiifano.
Allen Stone, Kam Hanamoikai and sophomore Brian
Soi will provide some punch in what VanOrden calls "physically strong"
lines. Juniors Brady Phillips, James Filiaga and T.J. Ewing will be
counted on for defensive help also.

Daily
Herald Picks Timpview #2 in Utah Valley
Not far behind is our No. 2 team, Timpview. Key losses at quarterback (BYU recruit Dan
Southwick) and offensive line will be a big concern for coach Chad Van Orden.
But Timpview is loaded elsewhere. Tight end-defensive end Bryant Atkinson (6-3, 230) is
an opponent-wrecker on both sides of the ball, while receiver Dane Church was a Daily
Herald All-Valley selection as a junior, catching 58 passes for 1,090 yards and 13
touchdowns.
Who will play quarterback? Mike Bateman and Lehi transfer
Cade Cooper are competing for the starting spot.

Cooper to transfer to Timpview
03/23/2000 By DARNELL DICKSON
The Daily Herald
PROVO -- The Cooper legacy at Lehi High has come to an end.
At least, that's the plan.
Cade Cooper, a
junior two-sport star at Class 3A Lehi, has announced he will transfer to Class 4A
Timpview for the 2000-2001 school year.
Tuesday night at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah County All-Star Classic, Lehi girls
basketball coach Lonnie Magnusson confirmed that Cooper announced his intentions to his
coaches earlier in the day.
Cooper, whose legacy includes his father and two brothers who have played quarterback
at Lehi, started as a sophomore but spent most of his junior season on the sidelines
because of a broken foot.
Cooper's foot eventually healed but Lehi stayed with senior A.J. Smith and advanced to
the state quarterfinals.
Cooper, also an All-Region basketball performer, was expected to battle with Sam
Trulock for the starting quarterback job next season under former BYU star Steve Clements.
Timpview has produced some outstanding quarterbacks including Bret Engemann, who is
competing for the starting job at BYU this spring and Cougar signee Danny Southwick, who
threw for 2,984 yards and 27 touchdowns last season.
Timpview coach Chad Van Orden returns most of his other skill players next season.
